Welwyn Garden City Orchestra and Chorus' 90th Anniversary Celebrations
The WGC Choir
THERE was standing room only at the Welwyn Garden City Orchestra & Chorus' anniversary concert.
A bumper audience crammed into St Francis Church, in Parkway, to hear the society's celebratory 90th anniversary show.
The star soloist of the evening was Andrew Watkinson, leader of the famed Endellion String Quartet, and president of the Orchestra & Chorus. He gave a dazzling and unforgettable performance in Bruch's Violin Concerto No.1.
In the choral works, soloists were soprano Jacqueline Dias, contralto Morag Boyle and baritone Crispin Lewis.
Other works in the concert included Stabat Mater by Pergolesi, Elgar's Triumphal March, Caractacus, and for the finale Handel's Coronation Anthems, Zadok the Priest. The latter is appropriate in this the Queen's Diamond Jubilee year, since it has been performed at every coronation since George II.
The Conductor was music director James Ross.
During the interval, audience members were able to see a special display from the archives of the Orchestra & Chorus from 1921 to the present day.
The concert was a resounding success, and expectations are high for the two concerts in June. Details can be found on www.wgcms.org.uk or call 01438 821510.
